What is off page SEO

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) has many different aspects which include On-page as well as off-page SEO tactics. We’ve explained in a previous post what On-site SEO is but today we explain “what is off page SEO”.

Off-page SEO, or “off-site SEO, refers to actions taken outside of your own website to improve your rankings within search engine results pages (SERPs).  As with on-site SEO, optimising off-page ranking factors looks to improve your websites appeal to both Search Engines and readers. In this article, we will explain what different type of actions are included in off-page SEO and why you should invest in these tactics as much as on-page SEO.

Different types of off-page SEO

Links

The most well-known off-page SEO tactic is link building. This can make several forms but in essence, it is about gaining a link to your website on another website.

Natural Links

Though this can occur through other marketing and sales activities, natural links can be passive and dependent on the other person’s desire to feature your website on their site.

Example: if your online store sold makeup and a makeup artist linked one of your products on their website because they’ve used it, that would be a natural link.

Manual Links

These can be created when you ask a customer or supply to put a link to your website on their site.

Example: If you are a retailer selling a particular brand, that brand/supplier may want to add you as a stockist on their branded website.

Self-created

These links are created by you, or your SEO team, to be placed on other sites. This can include directory links, commenting on blogs, leaving comments in forums and online press releases.

Example: Adding your business and it’s website URL to a business directory such as yell.com.

Combining manual and self-created links, guest blogging is a valuable way to get your site linked on another website. You create a blog article with links to your site and feature on someone else’s site. The benefits for them are that they get a piece of content for their website that is relevant to their audience and you get a link to your site from another website which may have a higher ranking than you.

Social media marketing

Although one might not recognise this as an SEO activity, Social media posting can contribute to your SEO ranking. As with all marketing efforts, social media can help increase your brand exposure. This is great to drive traffic to your site, improving your ranking, but your engagement on social media and the volume of shares can also help your off-site ranking. All businesses should be investing in social media to bolster their marketing while the benefit to your SEO is an added bonus.

Influencer marketing

If you haven’t heard of influencer marketing before, it’s one of the largest growing trends in the digital marketing world. Influencer marketing involves a brand collaborating with an online influencer to market one of its products or services. Originally the domain of celebrities, influencers can be “normal” people with a large online following. Many influencers are part of other social media channels, namely Instagram, Youtube and the blogging world. Getting a product placement on their channel or website with a link to your site can massively help your brands reach as well as your off-site SEO ranking.

So you now understand the different forms of off-site optimisation, but why is it important in the first place. Just like on-site SEO, Google and other search engines have ranking criteria which will boost your website further up the SERPs. All the above strategies contribute to your ranking in one way or another. Some of the key factors include:

  • Quantity of links to your domain
  • The trust and quality of the links to your domain, which includes the ranking of the other website and the specific page the link is on
  • Quantity and quality of social media links and engagement associated with those links.
  • Brand mentions on other websites, particularly news outlets and high ranking associations.
